Adele, Eds Shirans and ‘ABBA’ leaders in UK’s best-selling albums last year

Eight of the ten most popular albums last year are works by British artists. In the first two places are singers Adele and Ed Shiran with the albums “30” and “=”. Each of them has been streamed in the UK more than 500 million times last year, and billions of times elsewhere in the world, according to BPI.

The album’s top chart also reveals that many people in times of difficulty have sought the comfort of rock classics, many of whom have been discovered by music fans through streaming platforms.

In fifth place is the album that was released 40 years ago – the Queen’s selection of songs “Greatest Hits” with compositions such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You”.

In eighth place is Elton John’s biggest hit album “Diamonds”, which was released in 2017, and in ninth place is “Fleetwood Mac” hit selection “50 Years – Don’t Stop” released in 2018.

Also in third place are pop veterans “ABBA”, court, with their latest performance, compiled on the album “Voyage”.

Although streaming platforms still dominate music formats, the vinyl record renaissance continued last year, with sales reaching three-decades.

The popularity of audio cassettes also continued to grow, with sales up a fifth, reaching 18-year highs.

Overall, music consumption in the UK grew by 2.1% in 2021. 159 million albums or their equivalents are streamed or purchased on various platforms.
