According to the auto sector federation Febiac, the free fall can mainly be explained by the persistent chip shortages, as a result of which car factories are constantly shut down. Volvo Car in Ghent and Audi Brussels, for example, did not assemble cars for more than 20 days last year due to a shortage of chips.
The result: waiting times for new cars are increasing, from an average of 2 to 3 months to 5 to 6 months. For some electric models, it will even have to wait until 2023. Many cars that were ordered last year will therefore only be delivered this year. At the same time, many people would rather buy a used car quickly than have to wait a long time for a new one.
