With nearly two murders a day, the year 2021 ended as one of the most violent on record in Chicago, United States, as an increase in the number of shootings killed more than any in the last 25 years.
According to Police Department data, 2021 ended with 797 homicides. That’s 25 more than what was recorded in 2020, 299 more than in 2019 and the most since 1996. And there were 3,561 shooting incidents in 2021, which is just over 300 more than in 2020 and 1,415 more than in 2019.
In other words, Chicago ended 2021 with more homicides than any other city in the United States, including New York and Los Angeles., which had 300 fewer homicides than Chicago during the year.
Heading into 2022, Police Superintendent David Brown confessed that “(It was) a challenging year here in the city of Chicago. Too many families are recovering from the loss of loved ones due to gun violence. “
