From January 1, a higher excise tax is 2022 on alcohol and cigarettes. This may translate into an increase in the prices of these products. The government calculations show that for a bottle of vodka it costs about PLN 1.50, and a packet of cigarettes – about PLN 0.30. Only in 2022, due to the increase in excise duty, additional PLN 2 billion will be transferred to the state treasury.

Excise duty on alcohol and cigarettes
According to the records, since Saturday, excise duty rates on ethyl alcohol, beer, wine, fermented beverages and intermediate products have increased by 10 percent, and the minimum excise duty on cigarettes has increased from the current 100 percent to 105 percent of the total amount of excise duty, calculated on the weighted average price retail selling price of cigarettes.

The legislation introduced a minimum tax rate for smoking tobacco equal to 100 percent of the total excise duty, charged on a price equal to the weighted average retail selling price of smoking tobacco. The excise duty rate on the so-called innovative products was raised by increasing the quota rate by 100 percent.

The authors of the bill in the justification indicated that “an increase in excise tax rates will mean an increase in prices”. The government calculations show that if the fiscal burden is passed on to consumers, the likely price increase will be: in the case of a bottle of vodka, 40 percent. – about PLN 1.50; dry wine bottles (0.75l) – approx. 16 groszy; a half-liter can of beer – approx. 6 groszy; packets of cigarettes – approx. 30 groszy.
