– My hope is to end the corona pandemic in 2022, writes WHO leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’ New Year’s greeting on Linkedln.
He is optimistic that the coronavirus pandemic can be defeated in 2022. He calls for more action to make it happen.
– It presupposes that the countries cooperate, writes Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
He also warns that different distributions of vaccines worldwide may increase the risk of the virus developing.
– If we end inequality, we will end the pandemic and the global nightmare that we have all gone through. It is feasible, Tedros believes.
Globally, around 287 million corona infections have been registered, and close to 5.5 million of them have lost their lives, writes BBC.
Vaccine targets
Three out of four health workers in Africa are unvaccinated, according to WHO figures. At the same time, more and more countries in the West have begun to offer a third dose.
But Tedros believes there are also positive features:
The vaccine rollout was only in its infancy a year ago. Last year, the WHO approved ten different vaccines for emergency use, and more than 8.5 billion doses have been administered worldwide.
The WHO has set a goal that 70 percent of the world’s population will be vaccinated by mid-2022, and that action will be taken to ensure the fight against future epidemics and pandemics in the future.
– I believe that if we make progress in these areas, then we will gather again at the end of 2022, not to mark the end of a third year of pandemic, but to celebrate the return to the time before covid-19, writes Tedros
Knows the virus well
After two years, we know this virus well. We know the measures for the use of face masks, avoiding crowds, keeping distance, good hand hygiene, aeration, testing and infection tracking, Tedros believes.
– With all the knowledge we have, we can turn around this pandemic for good. If we do, we will save lives. It will ease the burden on health organizations that will provide respite to health workers who have stood up and sacrificed a lot in the last two years, he writes.
