Billions of notes

On January 1, 2002, more than 7 billion notes were put into circulation in 12 countries. It can now be used to pay in 19 countries and there are more than 27 billion notes in circulation.

Europeans still have billions worth of old notes and coins of the currency that was used for the euro. Bloomberg news agency calculated that this concerns an amount of approximately 8.5 billion euros.

In terms of guilders, this concerns an amount of approximately 450 million euros. The guilder notes can be exchanged for euros for the next 10 years at the Dutch bank.
