The Mauritanian health ministry organized an emergency meeting on Friday devoted to examining the epidemiological situation of the omicron variant and the significant increase in new cases of the disease in the country, especially in the wilayas of Nouakchott, Gorgol. , Guidimakha and Trarza.
The ministry had previously mentioned a new wave of the pandemic linked to the omicron variant.
During this emergency meeting, the Minister of Health, Sidi O. Zahaf said that the appearance of this variant means that new cases will increase significantly and rapidly compared to previous waves.
The minister added that the ministry’s approach to this new wave will be to deal with it in a decentralized manner, taking into account the regional dimension, before saying that the funding will be directed towards the various health structures on the basis of the results obtained, in accordance with the recommendations of the ministerial committee.
The ministerial committee, which met Thursday evening under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mohamed O. Bilal, decided to strengthen the health system and take new preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
But it seems that the country’s medical authorities believe they know that the variant has indeed spread in certain wilayas, the director general of health Mohamed Mahmoud ould Ely Mahmoud said that the epidemiological situation was characterized by a rapid spread of new cases, particularly in the wilayas of Guidimakha, Nouakchott, Gorgol and Trarza.
The director general of health said that the national institute for research in the field of public health discovered 14 cases of the omicron variant among 30 cases identified during examinations carried out the day before.
This emergency meeting, held at the Ministry of Health in the presence of the representative of the World Health Organization and other experts, allowed agreement on a work plan in the face of the new situation which takes into account all aspects of the question, both in terms of detection, control, or awareness, care and vaccination.
