Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
A group of scientists at the United States National Institutes of Health has detected the virus SARS-CoV-2 can stay for months in some human organs that suffer from Covid-19. This shows someone has “long covid”.
The study proved that corona virus cells can stay up to seven months or 230 days after a person is infected and experiences Covid-19 symptoms.
“The burden of infection beyond the respiratory tract and the timing of viral clearance are not well characterized, particularly in the brain.” write a journal entitled ‘SARS-CoV-2 infection and persistence throughout the human body and brain’.
“We performed complete autopsies on 44 patients with Covid-19 to map and measure the distribution, replication, and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 cells throughout the human body, including the brain, from acute infection to more than seven months after the onset of symptoms.” continued writing in the journal.
For the record, this journal has not yet passed the proof phase from peer scientists, so its claims cannot be broadly concluded.
The study also showed that Corona virus cells were widely distributed, from patients who died from Covid-19, to those who were infected without symptoms.
Although it is able to circulate in vital organs, basically the remaining Corona cells become a heavy burden in the respiratory tract.
During infection, the Corona virus infects cells throughout the body, including extensively in the brain, as well as in eye tissue, muscle, skin, peripheral nerves, and tissues in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and lymphatic systems.
It is still a question for researchers today, how can the Corona virus attack so many organs in the human body.
This was also questioned by one of the Corona virus researchers, Ziyad Al-Aly, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington.
He said that the National Institutes of Health’s research which stated that Corona cells could stay in the brain for up to seven months, was one of the openings for the light on the mystery.
“For a long time, we have been ‘scratching our heads’ and asking why Covid affects so many organ systems.” Al-Aly said, quoted from Forbes.
