For the time being, we can only dream that we would have a valuable satire in the Czech Republic that dares to shoot the highest-ranking politicians. An exception is a few shows on private channels, the most daring and successful of which is “Happy Monday”, broadcast by Seznam TV. Instead, domestic stations are flooded with various talk shows, with the exception of poor quality, in which various celebrities exhibit.
And it is in similar formats that the excellent American sci-fi comedy “Watch the Earth!”, Which became a hit for viewers of the Netflix streaming company this Christmas, laughs at us. As funny as it is, its content is alarming. It tells the story of two top scientists, Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), who discover that a giant comet is approaching Earth, the impact of which can cause a fatal catastrophe.
Therefore, they decide to draw the White House’s attention to the 100% real threat of the end of the entire planet. However, the president (Meryl Streep) will keep them shamelessly waiting for seven hours in the lobby of the Oval Office, because she has to deal with a spicy erotic scandal before the election. Even the second attempt is not successful, when the couple finally meets the president, the most powerful woman in the world responds: “We’ll wait and see.” She will change her mind only when the threat of a destructive comet allows her to deflect a sex scandal using the proven “Shake the Dog” method.
Vain effort
In a futile attempt to arouse the public, scientists turn to influential media and, thanks to contacts, end up on the most popular TV talk show, “The Daily Rip”, in which everything is subject to viewership. While the main star is a pop superstar, just breaking up with his partner, who also wants to promote his new single, a few scientists are pushed to the end.
One of the film’s best scenes (with Leonard DiCaprio’s other great acting, by the way) is the moments from the television studio, in which both educated scientists must submit to the rules of mass television “debilitating.” While the patient Mindy manages the interview in the studio, Kate can’t stand the unbearable servility of the moderators and their silly jokes at the expense of a very serious topic. When he tells her that he has to relieve the audience of bad news, he resigns and runs away from the studio. However, the charismatic Dr. Mindy will become “the sexiest American scientist.”
Nobody takes it seriously
However, after appearing on the most watched talk show again, he will no longer be able to control his behavior. The usual, intrusive joviality of the moderators, who are trying to downplay the threat of the comet’s impact on Earth, reacts irritably: “Can you please stop being so nice, damn it?” Doesn’t everything still sound so good, funny and likeable? Sometimes it’s just necessary to say things straight and listen to each other. So, I’ll say it again, that huge comet is crashing right on the ground. “ But even this time, no one takes his warning seriously.
However, the smile at the many entertaining scenes froze the audience when indignant Mindy complains in front of the cameras that instead of quickly taking all necessary measures to prevent the catastrophe, he gets rid of scientists who dare to disagree. Similarity purely coincidental?
