Hitler canceled his order two days later, but the surrounded allied forces had already begun to evacuate.
The decision to stop the advance of the German army near the French city of Dunkirk at the beginning of World War II was a fatal mistake of Adolf Hitler. Historian James Holland told about this in a documentary film 48 hours before the victory, writes Daily Express.
The researcher believes that in May 1940, the Wehrmacht forces practically surrounded the Allied forces in France. Thus, the war would actually come to an end.
However, on May 24, Hitler stopped his panzer divisions heading for Dunkirk. According to the scientist, this was “an absolutely catastrophic and potentially fatal mistake”, which, possibly, cost him the victory in World War II.
“This is a catastrophic decision of the Germans. Hitler does not understand the situation at all … The order not to attack was catastrophic, because it gave Great Britain a chance to evacuate,” the historian said.
Many of the German commanders on the front line were critical of Hitler’s order, but the order was complied with, Holland said.
Later, the military were able to convince Hitler and he canceled his decision. But the situation has already changed dramatically – during these two days, the Allied troops prepared for a large-scale evacuation and later removed almost 340 thousand people from the region.
Earlier it became known that found a submarine of “Hitler’s lost fleet”… The German submarine U-20 of the Hitlerite fleet was found off the northern coast of Turkey. The submarine was found by divers. They do not plan to raise it.
