Salt and Sanctuary is backed by American game developers from Ska Studios. In the game you play as a sailor who is shipwrecked on an unknown island. Your task was to transport a certain princess by sea to the king of the enemy country, whom she was to marry and thus avert the impending war. Unfortunately, your ship will be attacked by pirates and even the first boss in Kraken. Whether you defeat them or not, you still fail and your only task is to find the princess or at least find out what happened to her. You gradually reveal the story of the game from conversations with various NPC characters.
Salt and Sanctuary can be characterized as a 2D action RPG platformer combined with the metroidvania subgenre, where you unlock new areas by gaining new abilities. Some reviewers have included this game in the souls-like genre and its difficulty can compete with Dark Souls games. You gain salt and gold from defeated enemies, which you can use to improve your character and equipment. But you must watch out for ubiquitous death at the hands of enemies, because once you die, you have only one chance to recover carefully collected salt, which is used to improve your character. The game was released in 2016 and is normally sold on Epic for 380 crowns.
Salt and Sanctuary earned a metacritic from professional reviewers metascore 84 and a subsequent overall rating of 7.8 from the players.
