New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for parts of the US state due to Hurricane Henri, including New York City, Long Island and several other areas. In the United States, a state of emergency is often declared out of prudence, because powers are transferred from the federal to the regional level.
“New Yorkers, please, take this seriously, think of Hurricane Sandy,” Cuomo said at a news conference Saturday. It is hoped that the effects of the hurricane expected on Sunday will not be as bad as in 2012, but that is not certain. For New York City, Cuomo expects only heavy rainfall and some minor flooding.
The US weather service scaled Tropical Storm Henri, which is heading for the northeast of the US, into a hurricane on Saturday morning. The weather service issued a hurricane warning for parts of Long Island and Connecticut. Henri will probably land on Sunday afternoon local time.
