The main focus is on strengthening Ukraine’s northern and eastern borders with Belarus and Russia. This cooperation project will start already in January and will continue next year.
It intends to equip Ukrainian border guards with video surveillance equipment and unmanned aerial vehicles. The individual protection of border guards will be improved, as well as the provision in the field, transport and communication equipment will be strengthened.
This could provoke Russia’s opposition, as one of Moscow’s demands is to prevent Ukraine from arming itself and bringing NATO’s infrastructure closer to Russia’s borders.
However, the United States and other Western countries emphasize that Russia will have no say in Ukraine’s security issues.
Representatives of the United States have confirmed that talks with the Russian delegation on Moscow’s security requirements will take place on January 10 in Geneva, Switzerland. Representatives of the US National Security Council have indicated that it will be possible for both sides to discuss its concerns.
