Jakarta –
The city of Xi’an in China has implemented lockdown since last week. But the number of virus cases Corona (COVID-19) with symptoms in Chinese territory reportedly continued to soar for four consecutive days.
Since last week Xi’an city residents have not been allowed to go out of town without obtaining official permission from their employer or local authorities. Xi’an city authorities have restricted permission for its citizens to go out to buy basic necessities during the latest round of mass Corona testing starting Monday (27/12) local time.
Vehicles without an essential purpose are also prohibited from passing on local roads. As reported Reuters, Tuesday (12/28/2021), the emergence of a new Corona outbreak in Xi’an made the city with a population of 13 million hit lockdown.
Official data from the Xi’an city authority as of yesterday local time reported that 175 symptomatic cases of Corona were detected in a day. That number was recorded to increase when compared to the previous day with 150 cases in a day.
A total of 810 cases of Corona have been confirmed in Xi’an city due to the emergence of the latest outbreak since December 9. However, the omicron variant has not been detected yet.
Nationally, according to the National Health Commission, mainland China detected 182 symptomatic cases of Corona in the past 24 hours. The number was recorded higher than the day before when 162 cases were detected in a day, and marked the fourth consecutive day of spikes in Corona cases in China.
The burden of symptomatic Corona cases whose transmission occurred in the community (local cases) was recorded on Monday. It was also the highest figure since Chinese authorities began recording daily cases by classifying symptomatic cases separately from asymptomatic cases at the end of March last year.
The number of Corona cases in Xi’an city and throughout China is still relatively low when compared to the number of Corona cluster cases in other countries. However, Chinese authorities are still implementing strict restrictions on domestic travel, which are in line with national guidelines on preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
China’s national data shows that there have been no additional deaths from Corona, bringing the total death toll in the country to 4,636. In total, mainland Chinese authorities recorded 101,486 symptomatic cases of Corona in its territory.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a statement Friday that at least 26 Communist Party officials in the city had been sentenced for “not being thorough enough in preventing and controlling the outbreak”.
Chinese officials who are deemed to have failed to control the spread of Corona in their territory will usually be fired or given a warning. A statement from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection cited a weak approach to coronavirus testing and an uncoordinated response that hampered contact tracing in Xi’an city.
“Authorities will strictly monitor bureaucratic problems in disease control efforts, such as shirking responsibilities, not taking action, blaming each other and dealing with problems in a negative way,” said a disciplinary official at the local Communist Party.
