More testing within public schools is the strategy announced by the mayor to protect children when they return to school.
The city will go from carrying out 40,000 random tests to 80,000.
“Our children need to learn in person, so we are going to do more COVID tests in our schools. This is how we make our schools even safer, ”said Mayor de Blasio.
The move made parents like Ligia happy, who has a four-year-old daughter who is not yet eligible for the vaccine. This system of tests will be carried out to students from pre K.
“I know that some parents cannot obtain the ‘tests’, they do not know if it is a flu or something else, then if they are necessary,” said the young mother.
Mayor-elect Eric Adams assured that this initiative is being processed in conjunction with the new administration. The state governor also joined the measure.
And it is that the state governor Kathy Hochul promised to deliver two million tests to the city so that they can continue with their initiative.
The mayor also announced that when a student tests positive, home tests will be given to their classmates and those who test negative will be able to return to class.
A grandmother says that “The question is to protect the children who are the future of tomorrow … I am very concerned for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially the youngest ones”
At the moment, parents of at least 330,000 unvaccinated students have consented to random testing, but this number will increase because vaccinated infants will also be tested.
The mayor also recommended that parents test their children before January 3, back to school day.
