The death penalty is abolished in Kazakhstan
Nursultana, Dec. 29, LETA – RFE / RL. Kazakh President Kasim Zhomart Tokayev has signed a law abolishing the death penalty, Tengrinews.kz reports.
“The Head of State has signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan” On Incorporation of Amendments and Supplements to Certain Legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the Abolition of the Death Penalty. “
A moratorium on the death penalty has been in place in Kazakhstan since 2003, and no executions have taken place in the country since then.
On December 23, senators passed a law abolishing the death penalty in Kazakhstan.
“With the adoption of this law, Kazakhstan has joined the group of countries where the death penalty is banned by law. In addition, our country is showing its support for the international movement for the complete abolition of the death penalty,” said Sen. Speaker Maul Ashimbayev.
