Putin calls for closer ties between the countries of the former Soviet Union

At a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States in St. Petersburg, Putin said that many things have changed dramatically in recent decades.

Putin said the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1991 was driven by both security and economic considerations.

This union was formed shortly before the end of the Soviet Union at the end of December 1991.
Putin pointed out that in the places where the intended close relations were maintained, the countries eventually developed in different directions.

“It must be said that the ties that have survived since the Soviet era have generally played a positive role,” he added.

Putin avoided mentioning Ukraine, which withdrew from the Commonwealth of Independent States in protest of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and Georgia, which left the union after Russia’s attack in 2008.

Moscow has recently insisted on “security guarantees” from NATO, including a promise not to expand further east.
