San Salvador, Dec 27 (Sputnik) .- The Guatemalan Army on Monday seized an arsenal hidden in one of the villages of the department of Sololá (southwest), where a State of Siege is in force as a result of the massacre of 13 peasants of the ethnic group Maya K »iche in mid-December.
“As part of the actions of the State of Siege, Guatemalan Army Units during patrols in the Chrijox village, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, Sololá, located more than 500 cartridges, explosives and artisanal mortars,” the military institution tweeted.
In the aforementioned municipalities, constitutional guarantees such as freedom of action, the right to assembly and demonstration, the possession and bearing of arms are restricted, and a night curfew is in force, while promoting dialogue between opposing communities.
According to Rubén Téllez, Army spokesman, the officers in charge of these operations met with community leaders in order to reach agreements and maintain a state of peace and coexistence, while trenches and firing points for alleged ambushes are dismantled.
The massacre of yore occurred on December 17, when an armed and organized group ambushed the victims as they went to “tapiscar” (collect corn), and a police officer, who was part of an escort requested by the community, also died in the skirmish. .
The victims went in a truck to a mountainous area to harvest corn, in an area that ancestrally belongs to Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, but is now in dispute with Nahualá, according to the Prensa Comunitaria portal.
