Yonkers building fire leaves 40 homeless at Christmas – NBC New York (47)

A video captured the terrible moments that residents of a building in Yonkers experienced after a fire just on Christmas Day.

Firefighters responded to the fire from four alarms in the building located in Elliott Avenue shortly after 11:00 pm on Saturday, police said. The four-story building was completely destroyed after the roof collapsed.

Investigators believe the fire started on one of the back porches of the 4-story building. The teams remained at the scene for hours.

A nearby building also caught fire and suffered minor damage.

Most of the residents, about 40, made it out on their own, according to the Fire Department. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths to residents of the building related to the fire.

Thirteen firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.

The Red Cross said it was assisting at least 11 families displaced by the fire. Damage estimates were not yet known.

The fire department is investigating the cause.
