The Queen honors deceased man in annual Christmas speech: “All these years I have been my mainstay”

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth delivered a Christmas speech as usual on Saturday. She talked about the loss of her husband Prince Philip, among other things, and recalled the “naughty twinkle” in his eyes in an unusually personal Christmas message to the nation.

The 95-year-old queen said that while Christmas is a time of happiness for many, it can be difficult for those who have lost loved ones. This year in particular, she understood why after losing her husband, Prince Philip (99), in April after 73 years of marriage.

“His sense of service, intellectual curiosity and ability to squeeze pleasure out of any situation were all unstoppable,” the Queen said in her traditional pre-recorded party broadcast, paying tribute to “my beloved Philip.”

She delivered her speech sitting at a desk that had a picture of herself and Philip, arm in arm, looking at each other with a smile. The photo was taken in 2007, when the couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

For her broadcast, the Queen wore the same sapphire brooch she wore on her 1947 honeymoon and for the diamond wedding portrait. Photos of her and Philip appeared on the screen at different stages of their lives.
