A ESPN This Sunday revealed the NBA’s plans for a new tournament, to be played during the regular phase. To be agreed, the test would come into action in 2022/23, with the possibility of the debut being postponed to 2023/24.
On the table is a tournament similar to the Champions League, of which commissioner Adam Silver is an avowed fan, meaning the 30 teams would split into groups, with the top eight teams advancing to an elimination tournament that it was going to end before Christmas.
In order to guarantee the support of the Players Union (NBPA), the NBA offered the possibility of paying one million dollars (about 883 thousand euros) to each of the athletes of the winning team, in addition to other financial incentives. The teams expect an increase in revenue of around €2.3 million with the increase in home games.
If the new test is approved, the regular phase would be reduced. Instead of the 82 games currently being played, each team would make 78 before the play-off.
