“NATO enlargement to countries like Ukraine and to other countries that were part of the Soviet Union is, in fact, a matter of life and death for us.”
He stated this on the air of the program “Moscow. The Kremlin. Putin ”on state television, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, BNR reports. In an interview, he said Russia was threatened by “further expansion of NATO’s political and military infrastructure.”
Peskov added that he remains moderately optimistic about the upcoming talks between Russia, the United States and NATO in January.
“When diplomats sit at the negotiating table and it is not public, a very different conversation begins – more concrete, calmer and often more balanced. So for now, however, I remain moderately optimistic and hope for the consultations we look forward to.” he says.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that talks within the Russia-NATO Council were scheduled for January 12 in Brussels.
