The number of PLWHA in Karangasem fluctuates, until October 2021 there are 35 PLWHA

AMLAPURA – From January to October 2021, the Karangasem Health Office recorded 35 positive cases of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Cases of HIV/AIDS in Karangasem have fluctuated.

The head of the Karangasem Health Office, I Gusti Bagus Putra Pertama, explained that in the last five years until this year, cases of HIV/AIDS tended to go up and down.

From 2017, for example, 52 cases were recorded, then in 2018 there were 73 cases, in 2019 there were 39 cases, in 2020 there were 51 cases and this year there were 35 cases.

“In the past five years it has gone up and down. 2018 was the highest,” he explained.

He revealed that the number of PLWHA as of October 2021 was mostly of productive age. Between the ages of 25-49 years.

The highest cases were found in the Kubu sub-district with an average of 9-18 cases reported annually.

“They are in mentoring status and undergoing routine treatment. So we do a strict screening. When there are new cases, they are immediately accompanied,” he explained.

Those exposed to HIV/AIDS routinely undergo treatment at the Karangasem Hospital. They also receive antiretroviral (ARV) drugs every month to the Care Support Treatment (CST) unit at the hospital.

“We also work with NGOs in mentoring,” said Putra Pertama.
