There were twists and turns, spectacle and game facts this Saturday at Providence Park in Portland. For the Major League Soccer final between the Portland Timbers and New York FC, the scenario was most unpredictable and if the New Yorkers finally managed to win on penalties (1-1, 4-2 in tab), the victory could very well have shifted to the other camp.
Better entered the game, New York thus dominated the first period with better possession of the ball and a ratio of shots on target twice as high as its opponent. L’Valentin Castellanos’ opening score shortly before the break was therefore only fair reward for the NYFC (0-1, 41st). Moment of dismay in stride with a throw of a can of beer in the head of Jesus Medina, then in full celebration of his teammate’s goal. But the referee ordered the meeting to resume.
Mora snatches overtime
In the second half, Portland recovered, while seizing control of the game. And despite a long period of inaccuracy when hitting, the Timbers pulled out a unexpected equalization after stoppage of play, through Felipe Mora (1-1, 90th + 4). What to play a virgin extension of any new achievement, before a penalty shootout favorable to New York. Ronny Della’s men offer their club the first MLS title.
