Chamber of Commerce takes site and services offline due to security breach

The Chamber of Commerce has taken its website and all kinds of online services offline due to the major security vulnerability that was recently discovered. Only Monday morning everything is back online.

The leak is in an until recently relatively unknown software package called ‘Log4j’, which appears to be used en masse worldwide and is intended to keep logs. For example, the software registers which usernames log in to a website and when.

The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), part of the Ministry of Justice and Security, warned early this week that the holidays may be used to penetrate the systems. That is why the Chamber of Commerce considers it “wise to temporarily take the digital services offline at least during the Christmas season”. Also because the institution has a lot of private data and company information and also collaborates with other parties “who cannot always provide 100 percent certainty given the vulnerability in Log4j”.

According to the Chamber of Commerce, since the first warning from the NCSC on December 10, measures have been taken immediately and all updates and patches have been installed. But new vulnerabilities are still being found in Log4j, forcing companies and organizations to remain alert during the holiday season, states the NCSC.
