scorching summers endanger the Christmas tree

Published on :

It is one of the symbols of Christmas: the tree, which is decorated as the holidays approach. In the United States, the areas where these trees are grown were hit hard by the historically high temperatures last summer, threatening production and pushing up prices.

It is especially in Oregon but also in California and in the State of Washington that many fir trees are cultivated intended for sale during Christmas period in the United States.

This region of the Pacific coast experienced extreme temperatures last summer: we spoke of a phenomenon of “Heat dome”.

The American press reports the testimonies of farmers who saw their young fir trees turn from green to brown in a few hours at the peak of the drought or their trees reduced to ashes in the dozens of fires that ravaged Oregon this year.

Faced with the risk of shortage, reinforced by supply problems linked to the Covid-19 crisis, a group of American fir producers called on consumers to pre-purchase their Christmas trees this year. And it is fir trees on average 10% more expensive than in 2020 that are currently enthroned in American homes.

The historically high summer temperatures on the west coast of the United States could have longer-term consequences, as it takes several years for a tree to grow large enough to be sold.
