First of all, as already mentioned, the owner had the opportunity to use the road known from traditional combustion cars. The purchase of used cells or successful repair attempts in the event that the batteries are not chemically damaged, but that the electronics fail, for example, already happen in the world of Tesla. It is neither as cheap nor as easy as in exhaust gas, but it is manageable.
Secondly, all the valuable elements have been removed from the car, such as the engine, which will probably be sold (the unlucky battery has also been removed), and the creators will probably earn a lot from the viral spreading film documenting the explosion. At the time of writing this article, the video has approximately 3 million views.
What about these batteries?
Nevertheless, such an interesting case provokes one to ask, how is it with these batteries at all? Are these 22 thousand dollars for the most key and cost-generating element of the car, for which you paid at least 65 – 70 thousand in the showroom. is a lot of dollars or a little? Especially if we take into account the period of 8 years of its use?
The answer is not clear cut. Replacing the engine in a combustion car of a similar class, if the engine fails after the warranty (usually less than 8 years), without resorting to repairs or buying used parts, will also cost a lot.
For a few years, I saw the valuation of such an operation in a large BMW, probably with an R6 engine .. with labor, the operation cost probably 15 thousand. dollars. I suspect that these costs are many times higher today. As I mentioned before, it is obvious that in mass-produced combustion cars for decades, today we have more options for cheap repairs than in Tesla from 2013. However, I still have the impression that if the Finn counted the entire cost of using his Tesla and compared them to a gas exhaust of a similar class, even after spending these 22 thousand. would be ahead.
PS This does not mean that Tesla does not have to look at his hands. As a young company, it is behind the ears in terms of quality and service, and some quality mishaps are downright compromising.
