Florida breaks daily record with more than 31,700 COVID-19 cases in one day – Telemundo Miami (51)

Florida reached its daily record of COVID-19 cases after contagion reports that register more than 31,700 new infections in one day, according to figures reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English).

The 31,758 new cases reported bring Florida’s total to more than 3,864,288 since the pandemic began in March of last year. It is also the highest number of cases reported by the state in a single day and exceeds what was reported on August 26 when the state had 27,668 cases in a single day.

Florida’s cases have skyrocketed in recent days, averaging more than 14,600 in the past seven days, after the 7-day average would have been fewer than 2,000 cases as recently as Dec. 9.

The numbers have been rising to levels not seen since the rebound in the pandemic last summer. Since then, cases have risen steadily to numbers not seen since the Delta variant surge last summer.

Experts say the increase in cases is due to the fast-spreading Omicron variant. Testing has also increased in the last few days before the holidays.

The death toll related to COVID-19 in Florida was 62,347 as of Wednesday. It often takes days or weeks to report coronavirus-related deaths.

FREE TRIALS IN LIBRARIES
