The new home of Milan’s Inter and AC football clubs will be the “Cathedral”. This is the name of the arena project, which is to replace Giuseppe Meazza’s almost century-old stadium, called San Siro.
The design of the new stadium draws inspiration from two of Milan’s most famous buildings, the Duomo and the Victor Emmanuel II Gallery. It has a grassy area of 110,000 square meters.
The project was presented this week by the architectural firm Populous, which participated in the construction of London’s Wembley, Emirates Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“The new San Siro will be the most beautiful stadium in the world. It will be an attractive arena, accessible and sustainable, which will help the growth of both clubs and their global competitiveness,” said AC Milan President Paolo Scaroni.
The final project should be presented next year. The new stadium is to have a capacity of about 65,000 seats, which is a significant reduction compared to the current 80,000. From the current plans, it seems that the new stadium will grow next to the old San Sir, which will be almost completely leveled with the ground except for some parts that will remain part of the complex.
