Juventus are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the Italian club have the power to dominate their domestic competition. However, for a long time they failed to win the biggest competition of all, the UEFA Champions League. Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing, Mr. Champions League himself, hasn’t worked out well for Juve.
Juventus have repeatedly approached “Big Ears”; the closest was in 2017 when Real Madrid beat them in the final, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid. It stung a proud team with an aging backbone, and yet they were able to keep their stronghold on Serie A.
A year later, when they signed Cristiano Ronaldo, they had won the Scudetto seven times in a row, and people had high hopes, but that did not happen.
Buffon talks about effect Cristiano Ronaldo had on Juventus
Legendary Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was Ronaldo’s teammate for a brief period. However, they were knocked out of the UCL by Ajax in 2019, and it was all downhill from there. Buffon spoke about it in an interview with TUDN and revealed what Juventus has lost.
“I think Juventus has lost that DNA of being a team. We reached the Champions League final in 2017 because we were an experienced team, but above all, we were one unit… We lost that with Ronaldo, ”said Buffon. Ronaldo’s tendency to grab attention and the ball, on occasion, has led to a unified Juve side that has centered around one man.
The state of Juventus and Ronaldo after leaving Turin
This statement is hard to believe because even after Ronaldo left, Juventus are still struggling in the league. They barely reached UCL last season as Ronaldo’s 30 goals lifted them to fourth place. This time around, they are fifth in the league after the end of half of the season and are 12 points behind Inter Milan.
However, this is also due to the fact that managerial instability over the past year and poor squad constitution has had wider repercussions for the club. What do you think of Buffon’s comments?
