Three terrified young children were found hiding under a blanket in a back bedroom of a New York apartment that caught fire a day ago, authorities said Friday.
Police responded to the emergency call at a Columbus Avenue complex in Rockland County’s Spring Valley around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. According to the report, officers were able to observe dense smoke billowing from the top-floor apartment.
An officer had to crawl through the corridors due to the smoke that prevented him from breathing, but his daring and heroic effort led him to find the three children, ages 1, 2 and 5, hiding and terrified under a blanket in a back bedroom.
Fortunately, the little ones were not injured, but their mother was injured when the flames broke out, so she was unable to help them escape. Police had to enter the home before firefighters could arrive to put out the flames shortly after.
The whole family is expected to recover. The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Friday.
