The building has recently been renovated, news channel ABC reports. Work had recently been halted. It is unclear whether the renovations are related to the collapse.
rickety wall
The owners of the building would have paid a fine of $3155 for a violation in October of last year, according to The Gothamist. The renovation was halted on June 10 because a stone wall of the building threatened to collapse.
A shocked local resident tells the blog how she saw the building collapse. “I was walking to my car when I saw it happen and a huge cloud of dust was forming at the site of the building. It sounded exactly as you would expect.”
