Lilibet was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. She was named after a pet name of the Queen: that’s how Princess Margaret called her older sister Elizabeth when she couldn’t speak very well, and the family has continued to use the pet name for a long time. Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband who died on April 9 this year, may have been the last to address the Queen with Lilibet.
Lilibet’s second name Diana refers to her grandmother Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in 1997 in a traffic accident in Paris.
