The UK is one of the countries most affected by the Omicron variant. The country has even reported one case of the death of an Omicron patient.
UK COVID-19 cases jumped by 106,122 as of Wednesday (12/22/2021), the biggest increase since the start of the pandemic. Health authorities said the increase occurred because cases of the Omicron variant also continued to rise across the country.
What is the condition of people who are infected with Omicron?
Britons who tested positive for the Omicron variant were said to be less likely to become seriously ill than those who contracted Delta, British government scientists said in preliminary real-world data on the severity of the disease.
While Omicron’s cases in the UK appear to be milder overall, the UK Health Safety Administration (UKHSA) has found her symptoms are not mild enough to avoid a large number of hospitalizations.
Quoted from the Politico page, Thursday (12/23/2021), UKHSA found evidence that for those who become seriously ill due to the Omicron variant, there is still a high probability of hospitalization and death. The scientists also confirmed that Omicron’s transmission was very high, meaning that even if it was milder, infections could skyrocket and could end up in a hospital.
Meanwhile British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that there was still “uncertainty” about how severe Omicron was, and how this would impact hospitalization rates, but said the UK would not face further COVID-19 restrictions before Christmas.
