The new computer screen DualUp from LG, whose full name is 28MQ780, is something completely new. Namely a 28 inch screen in a strange 16:18 image format.
We have gradually got used to ultra-wide 32: 9 screens, which are like two 16: 9 screens next to each other. Very cool when you play, and can be very convenient if you have many windows next to each other – or want to get a better overview of large spreadsheets.
Two screens on top of each other?
But what if you instead want two identical screens on top of each other? For example, if you edit video, and want the main image at the top, while all channels with images, sounds and effects are layered on top of each other on the screen below? So far, the solution has been two screens, mounted on a dedicated stand to bring about this solution.
But LG has now come up with an all-in-one screen solution that meets this need, in the DualUp 28MQ780. A 28-inch screen (27.6 to be more precise), with dual QHD resolution. Specifically 2560 x 2880 pixels, in a 16:18 image format.
By using two monitors, the whole thing becomes more streamlined and the solution also works for computers that only support one monitor.
Nano IPS
The panel is of the IPS type, with nanostructures in the color filter for sharper colors. The screen covers as much as 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, which is used for Ultra HD video and games with HDR.
However, this is not an optimal HDR screen, even though it supports HDR10, with only 300 cd / m2 in brightness and fairly ordinary 1000: 1 in contrast. In other words, it is conceivable that video technicians who work with HDR content want something else.
Not for games
This is not a game screen, as it lacks both FreeSync and G-Sync support, which is needed to get the most out of fast screen speeds. In any case, it is also not a very common screen format for games. The screen frequency is not specified, but for the reasons mentioned we guess that this is a pure 60 Hz deal.
Connections
The monitor has two HDMI inputs and a DisplayPort input, as well as a built-in USB hub with three Type-A connectors. It also has built-in 2 x 7 watt stereo speakers, but we always recommend a good pair of external speakers.
LG DualUp 28MQ780: Availability and price
We do not know the price, not even when we can buy it. But it will be launched during LG’s digital CES conference on January 4, so then we’ll find out more.
