Holger Rune believes it is a good thing for the game that the younger generation is making a breakthrough and posing a threat to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The Big Three have dominated tennis for so long but Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas have arrived and have proven that they are more than capable of making a strong result on the bigger stage.
In his interview with Essentially Sports, Rune was asked about when the domination of the Big Three will end and the next generation will take over in 2022.
“Well that’s the plan. I hope so, I hope the kids will too. I also tell myself to come over and see some new guys up there. We’ve seen it before. some new ones like Zverev, Medvedev, although they’ve been on tour for a while now.
But still, it’s great that you don’t see Roger, Rafa all the time, and Novak, even though they’re probably the best in our sport, ”Rune told Essentially Sports.
“We miss those games when they go against each other. But it’s fun, also for the public, to have new blood and new energy, that’s for sure. For us, too, it’s fun, because we’re so young and we’ve always admired these guys and waited for these tournaments to face them.
And now we’re finally here. So it’s about giving all we have and doing as well as possible. ”
Rune praises Carlos Alcaraz
Rune and Alcaraz are only 18 years old and some of the most promising and talented players on the circuit.
Some believe that Rune and Alcaraz could form the next big rivalry. “Yeah, I saw for sure, he was really quick from juniors to seniors, he did that in an incredible way.
We have obviously played against each other a lot of times, both in the juniors, and now for the first time on the tour. And I think it will definitely not be the last.
And as you say, it’s good that we can push each other; when I was a junior maybe I was a little better than him, then he passed me a little bit.
So it’s good to stimulate each other, “Rune explained.” And I think that’s important, even at a young age there’s also (Lorenzo) Musetti. We’re all good friends, we train together, we’re kind of good rivals. So I hope it will be the next big 3.
