The government took into account the experience, reputation, resources and qualifications of the Road Transport Directorate to carry out the delegated task effectively.
The Ministry of Transport pointed out that investments of 295 million euros from the Recovery and Sustainability Mechanism in Latvia are planned to implement the green traffic reform in Riga and Pieriga by 2026.
The approved plan envisages the reform of the public transport route network in the Riga metropolitan area in Latvia, including the development of passenger traffic on the railway line Riga – Bolderāja (in the future to Daugavgrīva), providing transportation by battery trains.
“The green traffic reform will promote a change in the mobility habits of the residents of the Riga metropolitan area by creating a competitive environment-friendly public transport and micromobility offer in relation to private transport. Significant investments in infrastructure and environment-friendly public transport are planned, more environmentally friendly public transport than private transport, “the ministry said.
The ministry said battery trains are gaining popularity in Europe as countries strive to meet their climate targets. Battery trains run on battery technology – they can run both on electrified routes using existing technology and on non-electrified routes using battery power. Thus, battery trains are a more environmentally friendly solution for citizens who travel on non-electrified routes on a daily basis. Battery trains can also benefit those who live close to the tracks – these trains are quieter and less polluting.
The optimal model of the battery system is the use of battery trains on already electrified lines (charging takes place during the journey), where the batteries can provide additional mileage even in the non-electrified part without major additional infrastructure improvements.
Battery trains are widely used in Austria, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Japan. Battery trains are also being used in Denmark, France and Hungary. Lithuania also plans to use battery trains.
