Most allergic reactions after first vaccination

All patients who experienced severe allergic symptoms were treated and recovered. Most of these types of reactions occurred in women under the age of 60. In half of the 348 reports, the vaccinates showed symptoms within 30 minutes of receiving the shot.

People who showed severe reactions to the first injection could then receive their second injection under supervision in the hospital. This generally went well, the Dutch Association for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (NVvAKI) reported last month. At the time, the association also said that the sometimes violent reaction after the first injection turned out not to be an allergy, but, for example, a stress reaction.

Lareb also says it is possible that people had symptoms consistent with severe allergic reactions, without a demonstrable allergy. “That does not mean that this reaction is not as severe as an allergic reaction,” said the spokeswoman. In addition, it is possible that there have been more cases of allergic reactions because not all cases are reported to the adverse drug reaction center.

According to the spokeswoman, it is “not surprising” that most of the reports that Lareb receives occur after the first injection. “It is possible that people who get a reaction will get it right on the first shot,” the spokesperson explains. “It’s also possible that people report it less with the second shot.”

Of the 348 reports, 88 were reactions consistent with anaphylaxis. This is a serious reaction with a combination of symptoms, such as redness, skin rash, swelling of the throat, mouth or eyes, tightness of the chest, low blood pressure or faster heart rate.
