Intel is preparing a special edition of Alder Lake processors with even higher performance, which will continue the tradition of the i9-9900KS. It should be the new most powerful CPU for games, which will further complicate the Ryzens with 3D V-Cache, which AMD is preparing in response to Alder Lake.

Intel launched the first last month procesory Alder Lake and with the highest model Core i9-12900K gained leadership in single-threaded and gaming performance. But Intel may not be done yet. Information has emerged that it is preparing an even more powerful model or special edition processor, Core i9-12900KS. This would have even higher performance and insure Intel’s management against a possible counterattack by AMD processors equipped with 3D V-Cache.

That Intel is probably planning this Core i9-12900KS model is written by the VideoCardz website, which allegedly found out from behind the scenes. Samples of the processor are already being tested by the board manufacturers, so there could be a decent chance of a real release.

The designation KS s appeared on the market some time ago in in 2019. It was an improvement of the eight-core Core i9-9900K model, which consisted of Intel making its 5.0 GHz single-fiber boost a frequency sustainable on all cores, so the processor had a record all-core boost of 5.0 GHz at the time (versus 4 .7 GHz in i9-9900K). It was a limited edition, which stopped selling after a few months.

The Intel Core i9-12900KS could probably repeat this idea. The current Core i9-12900K has a maximum single-thread boost of 5.2 GHz (originally it was even perhaps the intended 5.3 GHz, but according to some marks, Intel changed its mind relatively shortly before the release), but its maximum boost for all large cores (P-Core with Golden Cove architecture) is only 4.9 GHz.

According to VideoCardz, the Intel Core i9-12900KS should again have an all-core boost of 5.2 GHz for all eight powerful P-Core cores. There is no information yet about whether the single-core boost has increased to 5.3 GHz. It is possible that it will again be a CPU that will have an identical boost for one to eight cores.

This could bring a noticeable improvement in games, where limiting the maximum frequency to only one to two threads could bring some slowdowns when the game exploits more threads. As a result, the processor could further increase the lead of the 12th generation Intel Core over the Ryzeny 5000 in games. Performance in multithreaded applications could also be improved, but the question is whether frequency control due to the PL2 limit will not trim the achieved performance before the CPU will be able to dial all eight Golden Cove at 5.2 GHz. But Intel could probably increase the maximum consumption in the boost, and then this restriction would be lifted.

However, the Core i9-12900KS could also use a special “bin”, ie sorted silicon with better properties, which will be able to achieve higher cycles at the same consumption. This could help a realistically achievable all-core boost even if PL2 does not increase from the current 241 W. And if it was really selective silicon, then probably the i9-12900KS chips could also be capable of higher overclocking than the i9-12900K .

It is not yet known when Intel will release this processor. But he could announce it next month at CES 2022 during his presentation, when they will probably be revealed as well procesory Alder Lake s 65W a 35W TDP.

The price of the Core i9-12900KS processor is also not known yet, it could probably be higher than the i9-12900K. And it is also possible that it may again be a special edition of the processor, which may only be sold for a limited time.
