IDC monitoring, Oppo managed to rise to the top position because it managed to maintain inventory despite the shortage of supply. Oppo is said to be leading in the low-end segment (Rp 1.5 million – Rp 3 million), which accounts for most of its shipments.

On the other hand, Xiaomi dropped to the third position due to facing supply and supply constraints. Even so, the company made Lei Jun it dominates the middle class segment (Rp 3 million – Rp 6 million).

Vivo is in second place thanks to increased offline sales and maintaining inventory levels. Vivo is considered capable of entering the ultra low-end segment because the price of the Y1s has fallen to below Rp. 1.5 million. This makes him occupy the second position in the low-end segment with its Y series.

Samsung maintained its place in fourth position despite a drop in shipments due to retail closures caused by the lockdown which slowed down offline sales. But interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 received a very good response by the market.

Temporary realme remains in fifth position by maintaining its shipment count despite supply shortage concerns. They are considered able to maintain momentum by refreshing several C series models with new processors that have a relatively stable supply.

HP Market in Indonesia Down

IDC’s monitoring results show that HP shipments in Indonesia fell 12.4% YoY, only reaching 9.2 million units in the third quarter of 2021. The second wave COVID-19 peaked in July 2021, causing the government to enforce PPKM regulations.

This in turn caused retail stores to close in Java Bali and several other points, so that offline sales were disrupted.

While the COVID-19 cases subsided in September, the mobile phone industry was still hit by a supply shortage that continued to impact the overall production and shipments of mobile phones. And along with rising component prices, causing price increases for some low-end 4G models.

“Vendors have had to rack their brains in dealing with this difficult supply situation, with some choosing to replace or not release models that have more supply constraints,” said Vanessa Aurelia, Associate Market Analyst at IDC Indonesia. “Some vendors are starting to explore other ways such as revisiting their distribution strategy to keep prices under control,” he added.

In Q3 2021 the supply of 4G phones is decreasing as OEMs focus on HP 5G. IDC noted that 5G’s share increased slightly to 7% from 6% in the previous quarter. The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones fell 27% QoQ to IDR 5 million in 3Q21, as OEMs strive to bring affordable 5G phones to the market.
