All diplomats attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The local authorities in the American metropolis see the meeting room as a ‘conference center’, which means that strict corona rules apply. Russia in particular does not like the measure.
Members of the delegations must demonstrate that they have been vaccinated if they want to enter the room for the meeting next week, New York informed the chairman of the General Assembly. The city accepts all vaccines approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) or the US regulator FDA.
Not everyone is happy with the measure. Russia said President Abdulla Shahid would like to discuss the matter urgently. Russia’s UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called the rules discriminatory and said barring diplomats from the conference room is a “clear violation of the United Nations charter.”
100 heads of government
The 76th meeting of the General Assembly allows delegations from around the world to discuss international issues. About 100 heads of state and government have already confirmed their arrival in New York. UN chief Antonio Guterres and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will meet on Monday to discuss measures to combat climate change.
The General Assembly is the only UN body where all members meet. Initiatives can be launched during the meeting on issues such as peace, economic progress and human rights.
