Jesse Smit, one of the cyclists who was hit by a delivery van on Sunday 12 December, died of his injuries on Saturday afternoon.

Jesse from Noord-Scharwoude was part of a group of eight young people who, after watching Max Verstappen’s race in cafe De Heerlijkheid in Oudkarspel, cycled towards Noord-Scharwoude.

Just before they left Oudkarspel via Voorburggracht, they were hit by a black van. Five of the victims between the ages of 20 and 22 had to be taken to hospital and two of the young people were in serious condition.

The van was found not much later by the police and a 28-year-old Langedijker was arrested. Although he has been released, he remains a suspect.

On Wednesday evening, a group of friends from the village lit a large number of candles at the scene of the drama and prayed for Jesse, who was in the worst condition. From the moment he was in the hospital, there was no improvement in his situation.

Mayor Kompier van Langedijk calls it ‘very sad’ for the family that Jesse has passed away. “We sympathize very much with them.”
