Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The surge in the latest variant of the Omicron covid-19 occurred in London. This makes the government will set stricter policies to be able to overcome it.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan even declared a “major incident” on Saturday (12/18/2021) to help hospitals cope with the surge in Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant.
Khan in his statement quoted from Channel News Asia, Sunday (12/19/2021) stated that he would take steps to coordinate closer with stakeholders in the government to suppress the Omicron case. Because, Omicron spread very quickly even in 24 hours it increased dramatically.
“So I have taken the decision, in consultation with our partners, to declare today’s major incident,” he said.
“This is an understatement of how serious things are,” Khan added.
Khan also announced a “major incident” in January when Covid-19 cases rose and threatened to overwhelm hospitals with infected patients.
This time it’s also serious because, the Omicron variant is estimated to account for more than 80% of new Covid-19 cases in London.
Coordination of the handling of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 pandemic will be led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson this weekend. These emergency committees will be delegated in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which have their own power over public health.
