US miscalculated the situation in the strikes in Syria and Afghanistan – NYT

The publication had over 1.3 thousand internal documents of the US Department of Defense at its disposal.

After examining the materials, the journalists came to the conclusion that the military department had downplayed the number of civilian deaths. The article speaks of “hundreds of victims” not included in the official statistics.

The authors of the publication suggest that the military did not take into account the fact that civilians may be in the buildings on which the attacks were struck, along with the terrorists. The management was often simply not informed about this.

Only 12% of such cases were investigated, and a significant part of the proceedings was dropped due to “incomplete or incorrect” evidence. As a result, only 10% of the victims’ relatives were compensated.

The Pentagon, in response to a request from the newspaper, announced the inevitable mistakes made during large-scale military operations.
