In the summer of 2020, the former society woman Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested. Then she had lived in hiding on a luxury property in a sleepy small town in the United States for several years.
Maxwell was arrested and charged with a number of cases of human trafficking and sex trafficking.
Epstein’s right hand
The prosecution believes that she was the financier Jeffrey Epstein’s right hand, and that it was she who helped him get a number of young girls who later performed sexual acts on Epstein.
The financier took his own life in prison in 2019.
Maxwell denies all charges, and in recent weeks the trial against her has been going on in a courtroom in Manhattan in New York.
On Friday, she was scheduled to take the witness box, and give her explanation. But on Friday night Norwegian time, several news agencies write that Maxwell denied this.
Risks long punishment
The case is thus suspended.
The arguments of Maxwell and her defenders are that they do not believe the prosecution has managed to prove its case beyond any reasonable doubt.
The lawyers also believe that their client is being made a scapegoat for something Epstein did.
The final arguments in the case are scheduled to be presented on Monday next week, and then the jury will withdraw and make a decision.
Maxwell risks a long prison sentence if convicted.
