The expert panel for the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine should only be used as an alternative when no other COVID-19 vaccine is available. This relates to reports of side effects of blood clots experienced by recipients.
In the United States (US), there are a total of 57 reported cases of blood clots from about 16 million recipients of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. A total of 9 of them, 7 women and 2 men, died.
Most of the people who died were known to have had a pre-existing medical condition, particularly obesity.
Some panel members did not recommend the Johnson and Johnson vaccine be completely banned. The reason is because this vaccine is still needed to catch up with vaccination coverage and the incidence of serious side effects is relatively small.
“However, it is very important that we don’t completely eliminate this vaccine,” commented Dr Jason Goldman, a clinical biomedical expert from Florida Atlantic University as quoted by the BBC on Friday (17/12/2021).
