Tomorrowland gets a permit for three weekends in 2022 (Domestic)

Tomorrowland has received a permit from the province of Antwerp to organize a one-off festival for three weekends (instead of two) in 2022. A number of conditions are attached to the permit, which have come from consultation with the neighbourhood. Tomorrowland is pleased and says it will adhere to the conditions.

Tomorrowland had submitted an application in September for three festival weekends in 2022, according to its own words to partly make up for the enormous losses caused by the 2020 and 2021 editions canceled due to the corona crisis. Both the province and the municipal authorities of Boom and Rumst have indicated that they are not reluctant to do so, provided that good agreements are made regarding, among other things, mobility and noise pollution. The permit is now effectively a fact.

“We are of course very happy with this,” says Tomorrowland spokeswoman Debby Wilmsen. “We can now start preparing for three weekends. They will all fall in July. We will work in the same way as for two editions, i.e. with the necessary variations on the poster.”

The conditions include the cancellation of our own helicopter flights, an earlier closure of The Gathering opening party at the campsite and agreements on mobility, fireworks and accessibility. “These are points that have come from consultation with the neighbourhood,” says Wilmsen. “So we were aware of this and we will stick to those agreements.”

The practical details of Tomorrowland 2022 will be revealed shortly.

Municipal authorities: “Once!”

The municipal councils of Boom and Rumst say that they will take note of the decision of the province in an initial response. “Both municipal authorities have already shown understanding for the economic necessity that the company felt to be able to recoup additional income,” said mayors Jeroen Baert (Boom) and Jürgen Callaerts (Rumst). “That was of course only one side of the story, for us it was important that the organization mainly entered into a dialogue with the neighborhood and other actors and that sufficient flanking measures were organized.”

The mayors emphasize that the once-only nature of the case has been enforced in a charter and that there are clear agreements about a number of concerns from local residents. “It goes without saying that we as a local government will honor the environmental permit issued and will furthermore especially ensure compliance with all promised flanking measures, so that this one-off special edition can take place with the utmost respect for our residents,” it still sounds. “All of this, of course, still in a climate where the pandemic in particular will determine what is and is not possible.”
