Caterpillar with 1,300 Legs Found in Australia

LONDON – For i lmuwan in Australia have found a caterpillar that has more legs than any other animal in the world.

As reported by AFP Friday (12/17/2021), the pale-colored caterpillar has more than 1,300 feet on its body which is about 95 millimeters in length.

The animal, named Eumillipes Persephone, was found nearly 60 meters underground in a mining area in Western Australia.

The record for the animal with the most legs was previously held by the Californian snail species with 750 feet.

“Previously, no caterpillar was known to have a height of 1,000 feet,” said entomologist Paul Marek, lead author of the study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Its scientific name, Eumillipes Persephone means ‘1,000 real feet’.

Like most other animals that live on the ground, caterpillars do not have eyes or colors. Scientists believe it lives by eating mushrooms.

One adult female snail of the species studied had a total of 1,306 feet and the other had 998 feet.

Caterpillars first appeared more than 400 million years ago. Currently, there are about 13,000 animal species s like that all over the world.
