The president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has reported that the Servizo Galego de Saúde (Sergas) has vaccinated 34 percent of the group aged 50 to 59 years with the booster dose and has warned that it would have been “irresponsible” not having continued with the campaign given the “relevance” of the third dose in slowing down infections and taking into account that the community has the vials to do so.
In the press conference after the weekly meeting of his government, Feijóo has thus defended that Galicia has anticipated the reinforcement of the vaccine for this group, before approval in the public health commission of the national system.
“With the reinforcement of those over 60 almost finished, with a high incidence, but that is reduced with the third dose,” he said, the decision was to “continue” with the group of 50 to 59 years. “Because it would be an enormous irresponsibility to order to stop vaccinating while the (public health commission) does not meet,” he warned, after criticism from the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, who has asked for unity of action in this regard.
Feijóo has defended that Galicia had “sufficient doses” and they are “showing the effectiveness”. In addition, he recalled that the EMA “weeks ago recommended” the booster vaccine for those over 40 years.
In this context, it was decided to continue with this reinforcement, with 152,000 doses administered. “34 percent of Galicians between 50 and 59 are already vaccinated today,” stressed the regional president, who has advanced that it will also reinforce all those under 60 who have received Astrazeneca up to 40 years in the next days.
MATERIAL AGAINST COVID AND DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY
Before the press conference, Feijóo chaired the weekly meeting of its Executive, in which the Xunta was authorized to allocate 317,000 euros for the acquisition of material to combat covid-19 in the health area of Pontevedra-O Salnés .
The Chief Executive has also reported that 1.2 million euros will be invested in the purchase of four digital mammography equipment equipped with 3D technology. They will be destined for the areas of Santiago and Barbanza, A Coruña and Cee and that of Vigo, for mammographic screening for the early detection of breast cancer.
