The 24-year-old Dutchman crowned himself last Sunday in Abu Dhabi as the first Dutch world champion ever in Formula 1. Verstappen was awarded the accompanying trophy on Thursday evening.
Lewis Hamilton once won the world title
“I had one drink too many on Sunday night, woke up Monday afternoon with a huge headache and thought I was off. I woke up swearing, because I had to work, film and such. Now I’m on a break. I need to get some sleep,” laughed Verstappen in Paris. “But I will probably be ready again at the beginning of January.”
His rival Lewis Hamilton was not there, as was Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. “I understand he isn’t happy the first few days after a race like this, but this is part of racing. You know that anything can happen, even in the end. That way he was able to win a championship himself,” Verstappen was referring to Hamilton’s first title in 2008. Then the Briton became world champion in the last race, at the expense of Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.
“We won the title on track, under the green flag. Nobody could take that away from us. Of course I understand the pain for Lewis, but I think Lewis will have the chance to go for his eighth world title again. So I see no reason for him to give up now, or stop.”

Stars on the blue carpet (featuring an ex-Spice Girl too!)
Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas and his girlfriend Tiffany Cromwell were also present in Paris. Lewis Hamilton, beaten in a blood-curdling way by Verstappen in the battle for the world title last Sunday, was missing, just like team boss Toto Wolff. Red Bull boss Christian Horner was there with his wife and ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.
